THE CARABAYA PROJECT

My co-directors Charles Stanish and Pepe Nunez examine a Late Intermediate Period (pre-Inka) chullpa, or burial tower.

The site of Illincaya, on a point high above the Ollachea river. A series of Inka style ritual platforms was superimposed on an originally pre-Inka settlement.

A prehispanic road runs through the entire valley. We suggest that the valley was along the route from the Inka capital of Cuzco to the gold mines to the east.

Stone retaining walls at the site of Kille Kille create terraces above a superimposed Inka plaza. These walls have a very different construction style than those found in other pre-Inka sections of the site.

Remains of an Inka structure in which several Inka style pot shards were recovered.

Two distinct building episodes are clearly shown in this photo from Illincaya.
